If you had to choose between windmills in your back yard, or a Cheney/Bush coal plant, which would it be? In fact the windmills would be scattered throughout the countryside, mostly on farm land, giving them extra income. They would also be highly terrorist resistant compared with large plants where a large percentage of capacity could be taken out with one strike.

The european trend, where they have fewer oil barrons to fight new proposals, is to place windmills offshore, perhaps 50 or 100 miles. The water is not too deep in the Atlantic, maybe 100 feet or so, but it is deep enough that there are relatively few shore birds to get caught in the blades. The wind propeller noise is lost in the surf noise. Sounds like the kind of proposal that a smarter President would be promoting.
