Lewis, Gerecht, the list of the knowledgeable and rational who share the view that Arab leaders a/k/a "thugocrats" respect only force is an impressive one.

Lewis is a scholar, Gerecht less so, but relevant experience counts, too.

My opinion that the Saudis would not use the oil weapon seems to be borne out. Not only do they have a huge debt to service, they need our protection from Saddam. Use of oil as a political weapon would get the "American" street quite excited, and make it politically difficult for Bush to pull Saudi chestnuts out of the fire should Saddam get a wild hair.

I had not thought about this before, but Saddam does make an admirable foil. Except for his threat to use WMDs, he keeps the area unstable, and therefore reliant on American protection. This has the beneficial effect of ensuring a steady oil supply.
