Debt-laden Sri Lanka to sell Marxist rebel booty
Thu Apr 25, 6:18 AM ET

COLOMBO, April 25 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka plans to sell nearly half a tonne of stolen gold seized from Marxist rebels to help finance a yawning budget deficit, the government said on Thursday.

The army recovered a large haul of gold and precious stones from rebel camps during a 1989 crackdown that ended a three-year revolt by the Marxist People's Liberation Front.

More than 60,000 people were killed in the uprising which the rebels financed by robbing homes, banks and jewellery shops.

"We plan to sell the gold by public auction to help bridge the budget deficit," Rural Economy Minister Bandula Gunawardene told a news conference.

Gunawardene said there were 1,500 bangles, 1,100 rings and 2,500 earrings among recovered loot stored in vaults of the central bank since the revolt ended.

He could not say how much money the auction would raise for the new pro-reform government, elected in December and struggling to contain the budget deficit to 8.5 percent of gross domestic product this year.

The deficit ballooned to 10.8 percent last year under a left-leaning coalition propped up by the Marxists who have now returned to democratic politics.

i mean what does the guy think about the conclusions...that silver may well not move up due to increased supply coming on line per Mr. Johnson's posts...

yes he is a valued contributor to the thread and i do not see where you would have thought otherwise by what i said, i just do not think that most around here agree with him...
