Actually, I was looking at the price of small scale hydro, since I have a small creek. The state of Cal. will pay up to half the cost of conversion if you go with solar, wind, or, I believe, fuel cell. I was going to get them to pony up half a solar system, and then add the hydro on my own. What stopped me was the involvement of the building inspector, and ultimately, the tax guy. That's where my biggest costs would have been

On a rural site I've got a Aero403 producing 100 - 400 watts at a cost of $520 for the unit. The rest of the alt energy system cost $4k incl. a backup diesel, bought used over the web.

A new 1kw - 1.6kw Bergey XL1 wind gen is about $2k, along with 1kw of solar cells should be sufficient for the house I'm building (but not the shop w. 3ph 220v equip). I'll still be on the grid if need be, but will have control of costs.
