Want is an interesting word. In English it can imply a lot of different degrees from mild desire to demand. It really gets you into trouble in Spanish. One of the reason's the world's Hispanic people have such a bad view of Americans is because they tend to use the Spanish word for want in a lot of situations where a native speaker never would, Like a store or a restaurant. Whereas in Spanish is more appropriate to say, "I would very much like" "it would please me if" or "would you be so kind to give".

They attache to the word want the same negative implications attached to the word greed, as you have done.
