Your statement is half right. The need is now, but the need also will exist in 3 years -- in all likelihood the need will be much greater in 3 years. After 7, maybe 10 years, I expect the need will be reduced. But in the meantime, we have the oil, the footprint would be 1/10000 of the area in ANWR, and it makes no sense whatsoever for us not to be developing it.

Again not that it matters, the squeeze for oil is now, not 3 years from now.

Again, there is every reason to anticipate that the squeeze will be worse three years from now than it is today.

I think you're overly balled up about this Saudi thing, though. The Saudis will come around when we need for them to. They won't have any trouble remembering who protects them from Saddam, & they're not fools.

Of course, it would be great for Saddam to make one of his typical miscalculations and move against the Saudis right about now. I think that would reinforce for them who needs whom.
