THE SHORT TERM CYCLE (8.6 MONTHS OR 262 DAYS)

The short term cycle has most often been described by Prechter and others as being approximately 9 months in length. However, in my opinion, this cycle, beginning with the current intermediate term cycle, seems to have contracted to 8.6 months in length, yet another sign that long term cycle forces are now pointing down.

Focusing only on those short term cycle lows that have occurred after the last 40 month cycle bottomed (i.e., after Oct. 28, 1997), this cycle has an average length of 8.6 months or 262 days, give or take two weeks (i.e., five percent), with important lows achieved on Jan. 12, 1998, Oct. 8, 1998, June 24, 1999 and March 8, 2000. The next six short term cycle lows are anticipated to occur on the following dates: Nov. 25, 2000, Aug. 14, 2001, May 3, 2002, Jan. 20, 2003, Oct. 9, 2003 and June 27, 2004. Note that the bottom of this cycle in mid-2004 is set to occur in the same month that the 55 year and 40 month cycles are anticipated to bottom, creating what may turn out to be "The Perfect Storm". Note also that if the 55 year cycle ends at its earliest possible date, that date (Sept. 14, 2001) is rather close to the key short term cycle low date of Aug. 14, 2001. While I doubt a secular bear market would end that soon, this time period may involve a bottom of short term significance.

May 3, 2002 - low ???
