MS is not as flexible as AB, but it is the historic eod standard - I no longer use it. TS is powerful, just overpriced and undersupported from my experience (not recent). Monoliths such as Omega, Reuters, etc. are not very user responsive and take forever to make minor changes, improvements and fixes which they then release as an upgrade and charge accordingly. AB is a user driven, user interactive program that is evolving at an incredible pace. In trying to explain this to others, I make the comparison to Eric S. Raymond's The Cathedral and the Bazzar - a great read and interesting chronicle of the open source movement (online at tuxedo.org ). AB doesn't own any database, but can import from just about anyone - flexible format is user supported. Plugins exist for TC2K, Quotes Plus, and MS format data that allows direct reading of those databases (i.e., no need to import daily) and a downloader exists to get free data from Yahoo, or anywhere else that you want if you specify the data path and format. If you can program C+/write .dll's you could write your own plugin for AB, or ask one of the heavy duty programmers that contribute regularly on the yahoo group - some have written plugins for candle stick pattern analysis, Gaussian smoothing, etc.). The eSig RT is a data plugin and other data providers are being considered as well. The tools that AB provides are essential for intelligent trading (backtesting ideas, equity curve display, fast scanning, etc.) but not unique to AB - it is the total package, value development and support that are unique.
