12:29 ET Barron's Plugged In column negative on semis
The Plugged In column notes Dan Niles analysis of a chart presented at the Intel (INTC) analyst meeting which hinted at just 10% capex growth in 2003 (this was mentioned on In Play last Thursday); also notes analysis by Merrill Lynch's Joe Osha, who found that semi cos' earnings would have been reduced by 69% in 2001 if stock options had been expensed, also not really a new story.

12:16 ET GLW Corning gets positive mention by Abelson (6.39)
In Alan Abelson's Barron's column, Archie MacAllaster makes the case for Corning, noting that the company's book value is $5.50 with $2 of that in cash, and that 48% of its business is in its Advance Materials unit which is still seeing solid growth; expects GLW to return to profitability in 2003 and hit $9 by year-end.
