DC TO SELL FUEL CELL IN ‘03

DaimlerChrysler will sell “a small number” of fuel-cell powered vehicles to fleet customers in the U.S. and Europe in 2003, a year sooner than the automaker had previously said. The announcement puts DCX in a race with Honda Motor Co. to be the first automaker to sell the zero-pollution cars.

Under pressure to reduce emissions and win an image as environmentally conscious, automakers seem eager to pull forward their first application of the hydrogen-powered fuel cells. DCX has not decided which vehicles to equip with the fuel cells, but the U.S. fleet customer will probably be in the Sacramento, Calif., area, where the California fuel-cell partnership is based, says Tom Moore, Vice President and head of DaimlerChrysler's Liberty & Technical Affairs advanced technology development group. The vehicles will run on compressed hydrogen. DCX has sold 30 fuel cell powered city buses to ten European transit agencies. Each customer is scheduled to take delivery of three of the buses during the course of this year.
