Our civilization, IMHO, is based on the idea that individual life and freedom are just as important as those of millions.

I disagree. It is based on (among many other things) the importance of individual life and liberty, but nothing in the Western tradition, or in US history shows a wide spread support for the idea that one death is just as bad as millions. If you look at American responses you see that one terrorist murder goes almost unnoticed. Thousands like in 9/11 result in a massive application of US military power. Millions would cause us to pull out all the stops and would shake the world.

unfortunately, US is split in the middle and Europe is against Israel.

Albert, the US has only recently become split. Sharon has done that for Israel. He has made Americans look for the truth behind all the rhetoric. Its too bad........because this fighting has been prolonged for too long by misconceptions and half truths.
