As the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is seeking absolute powers for its operations within Pakistan after the regrouping of al-Qaeda members, Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider has been asked to reach USA next month to finalise new arrangements aimed at countering terrorism and control of drug trafficking in the region.

The minister is schedule to leave for Washington on May 7, and will remain there till 10 and will hold a series of exhaustive meetings with FBI officials and US Attorney General to finalise the new arrangements to be put in place after Minister's arrival in Pakistan.

Sources said a meeting in the Interior Ministry is also being held here on Saturday to discuss the agenda of the Interior Minister's visit to the United States and likely response to expected demands of the US government on this count.

The sources said the emergent need to extend the FBI range and powers in Pakistan has been felt after the reports of regrouping of al-Qaeda members within Pakistan especially after the FBI took foreign and Pakistani nationals during a raid in Faisalabad last month.

The interior minister is said to have been extended the invitation by the US Attorney General to finalise arrangements to deal with the regrouping of terrorists within Pakistan and the likely activities of drug barons who have suddenly surfaced on Pak-Afghan borders to smuggle the drugs after the fall of the Taliban last year.

The sources said the interior minister will leave for Washington on May 7 and will be accompanied by the Director Generals of FIA and Narcotics in addition to some officials of other agencies. The US authorities were pushing Pakistani government to send its minister since the President General Musharraf visited US this year.

A joint working group is said to have been formed to counter the terrorism and narcotics control. Minister will be attending the first session of this joint working group in Washington. The News....

"Can you guarantee that a Wahhabi influenced youth will not blow up one of my cities?"
