You're still only considering Merced. Let's see what McKinley offers, first. Preliminary evidence points to it being a huge improvement. Then again, maybe I'm wrong.

The cost advantage is relative to current offerings in the high end enterprise market. And yes, I expect Itanium to blow the rest away in terms of price/performance. Don't confuse that with my earlier point against it being a cost effective desktop chip. That's a totally different subject.

Yamhill has nothing to do with Itanium. Yes, it's 64-bits, but it still doesn't address the needs of the high end enterprise market. It might make a good desktop chip several years in the future, when the market is ready to migrate to 64-bits, though.
