Siemens eyes buying Motorola networks unit-paper

FRANKFURT, April 28 (Reuters) - Germany's electronics and engineering group Siemens AG (SIEGn.DE) is talking to U.S. wireless technology giant Motorola (NYSE:MOT - news) about buying its mobile phone network division, a German magazine reported on Sunday.

Citing company sources, Focus magazine said the two companies would not consider a joint venture because neither would be satisfied with the role of junior partner.

A spokesman for Siemens declined to comment on the magazine report, which was released in advance of Monday publication.

Siemens Chief Executive Heinrich von Pierer said in an interview on Sunday with Euro am Sonntag newspaper there were no plans to expand to a joint venture the cooperation agreement with Motorola announced two weeks ago.

Von Pierer as recently as on Thursday said he did not see a merger in the mobile infrastructure unit for now.

Siemens has licensed in Motorola technology to develop third-generation (3G) mobile phone handsets and also will sell Motorola 3G handsets under its own logo this year.
