Ramsey,

<< China Mobile could be the do-or-die market for GPRS. They are big, they are prepared, they are pressured by Unicom, they have World Cup promo opportunity ... >>

When implemented, CMCC will have the single largest GPRS network in the world. They are live 16 provinces and implementing or ready to implement in the other 15.

I don't consider it do or die, however, on the front end, and once things start to roll across various regions which may be this fall but could just as easily be next spring (all dependent on services and implementation of service enablers), I don't really expect China to be in the vanguard (but I'd be delighted to be surprised) and the same goes for 1xRTT data services.

I'm somewhat basing that on the SMS experience where China was slow to implement, and takeup was hardly instantaneous.

<< They even have handsets available. However, take a look at these handsets. Nokia is going to have a tough time. Those MOTs are very hot looking. >>

Thanks for the links.

MOT v. NOK in China is rather interesting. They have been seesawing back & forth for 31 slot. NOK claims to have taken market share in China Q1. It is going to be interesting to see handset statistics for Q1. NOK claimed a good quarter (market share wise), but so did Siemens, and so did Samsung and Motorola. Somebody (other than just the Japanese) had to lose share.

In case you have not seen it, this article interviewing Lu Xiangdong, VP of China Mobile, called "SMS Growth Bodes Well For China Mobile's GPRS Launch", is pretty good even though it is 9 months old:

Personally I am more fascinated with the chinese ability to cycle around with that very loose chain,
hanging down..

Finnish bicycle shops are making good business of adjusting the standardized tension of all those chains
these early days of spring, not to forget all those fail-sure 12-32 gears and the two breaks.

Maybe not in Oulu were one in general also uses the bicycle all around the year, but now is the time
to switch from the studded wheels to the smoother summer wheels.

Tough sand stuff in Beijing, but even we here in the north got some african sand dropping down
on the snow this winter.

Obviously, we here in the north, are looking forward to all the more wellrounded ones on their bicycles,
and some women say the same, the other way around.
