Helping the Kurds is contrary to our good relations with Turkey. Turkish assistance would be imperative for an operation starting in the Kurdish region of Iraq. Consequently, this is a non starter.

I would think that organizing a religious war between Shia and Sunni in Iraq would be beneath the morality of the United States, but more importantly, beyond our abilities. I really doubt that a predominantly secular / Christian country is going to be able to convince the Moslems to kill each other. But who knows, maybe it would work.

But US military policy isn't based on hope.
