Notice how the guardian article doesn't mention anything about profitability of Volkswagen, just market share? It is the destruction of shareholder wealth, or the absence of any apparent concern about it, that leads Volkswagen to have market capitalisation that is trivial compared to its size, and that results in Deutche Telecom pouring $50 billion down the drain to buy Voicestream.
