I agree with your basic point, but to nit-pick, actually there were revolts in Germany towards the end of WWI, and the Russian Revolution began during WWI.

WWI broke out August 1914.
Russian Revolution 1917
January 5 1919 Spartacist (Communist) revolt begins in Berlin
Armistice Day November 11 1919

The revolts in Germany were sporadic, but there were also mutinies of soldier and sailors.

However, following up on your basic point, I agree that it's foolish to count on a revolution. It's also foolish to count on the Iraqis running away like they did during the Gulf War.

After we broke their supply lines, they were between Iraq and a hard place.

I guess I need to read up on the Iran-Iraq war, that should give a better idea of what to expect.
