I don't know the details (especially for taxes) but Intel, for example, was writing down goodwill from earnings over a period of about five years (based on net goodwill / charge).

You can write down anything you want, any time you want, "Pro Forma."

As long as its a legitimate loss, and can be documented, you write down just about any loss as a cost.
