Dan, re: recompiling for Itanium runtime

For Word (or most applications) I don't think performance is an issue.

For Photoshop would there be any optimizations likely specific to an image? If one were editing a large file and optimizations were possible it might well be worth it - I hear some of the operations can be quite time consuming. The same would also possibly apply to other applications as well. A five minute (?) recompile to save 10% on an operation that takes an hour but it is repetitive?

I know your responses was tongue-in-cheek but run-time optimization works well for Java and was also something that HP was exploring by running software through an emulator even on the native platform. Some info here: arstechnica.com

My reply is also a little tongue-in-cheek as this would not be appropriate for most users/systems/applications. For some scientific work that takes days to run it may be beneficial to run one pass for optimizing then the next "hundred."

Of course the user would need the source files but I am sure the software companies would happily comply. <g>
