You're right, current estimates vary from 2 percent to 12 percent. I do think that most studies rely on self-report, which culls out folks who've engaged only a few times and very likely ends up underreporting, due to the shame factor.

The 2000 U.S. Census allowed people to indicate being part of a same-sex couple.

The result was 1,202,418 persons, or 0.42 percent of the U.S. population. The division between male couples and female couples was virtually 50-50. One can place whatever spin they may choose on these numbers.
