"I don't dare tell anyone how much money I have made the last two years being bearish."

At first I thought you were quoting me back to myself!

I am learning a lot of things I never knew about making money. For example, just giving money away does not make you friends. People get a disdainful feeling, somewhere between "that's only fair" and "so what!"-- or even, "he just wants a tax deduction."

I never wanted to be bearish: it just turned out that everything was terribly overvalued--and there were ways to bet against the overvaluation.

But as --I think it was the old-time comic actor Joe E. Brown who said it, or maybe it was another Hollywood celebrity: "I've been rich and I've been poor. Rich is better."

I guess it is also better to be young than to be old, but being the latter, I keep reflecting, "I KNOW how most of my life has turned out, and it was pretty good; you guys don't know." Ever been turned loose in Paris at the age of 21, totally independent, when a good meal (with wine included) cost $1.25? Nothing I know beats that.

I think if you tried to help others in your family with any kind of asset allocation based upon your prognosis for the economy you would find very stiff resistance. For many reasons, I think it is good not even to try ... but it's hard not to.
