I would expect that all Korean, KDDI and US handsets are using 1x MSM5xxx's by now, which leaves who else but the Chinese?

Unfortunately, this is not the case. The vast majority of handsets sold in the US during the first quarter still had the MSM3xxx in them. PCS is the largest exception since they are seeding the market with 1x handsets....but Verizon, Alltel and Leap have been much less aggresive. The same is true for handsets being sold in Latin America.

Another possability on price erosion of IS95A/B chipsets....I think handset manufacturers skipped a generation of Q's chipsets. I dont follow this as closely as I used to....but I believe that the vast majority of handsets currently on the market have the MSM3100 in them. For some reason, very few handsets with the MSM3300 were designed. The MSM3100 is a pretty old chipset and I wouldnt be surprised if it had moved far down the price curve.

Just some thoughts....by the way, great post on chipset ASP's.

David,

<< I would expect that all Korean, KDDI and US handsets are using 1x MSM5xxx's by now, which leaves who else but the Chinese? >>

I would think US still has to be still predominately MSM3xxx market (not that many 1x models qualified yet) and certainly same with Latin America. Remember CC stated that mix was shifting towards Americas with lower ASP's, and this was 1st quarter over 50% 1x.

PCS only carrier to have qualified a real quantity of 1x sets and if I recall they said they had 1 million 1x subs.

David,

Thanks for sharing your research, very interesting.

Are you sure that revenues for chips are always recognized in the same quarter that they're shipped? I wonder if revenue for shipments towards the end of a quarter might be booked the following quarter at times. That would skew your model a bit.
