Eric:

So far, I think I'm hearing a consensus that I'm not far off in my conclusion that QCOM is selling MSM3xxx's (be they 3100's or 3300's) at a pretty steep discount (50%) to the $22 they were getting as recently as 6 months ago.

The corollary to that is that 1x chipset ASP's are holding up around the $35 level. Which is what I've been assuming in my broader attempts to peg some numbers on how QCOM's business will scale going forwards.

Thanks for your responses/input, and SP's, JV's, c2's and Slacker's also.

David T.

MSM3100 has been US mainstay

The 3100 better not be the US mainstay much longer.

The US CDMA service providers need to be activating GPS phones if they are going to meet the E911 requirements they agreed to in the FCC waivers. This means today's MSM3300, 5100, or 5500 devices need to be deployed.

The GPS activation requirements for the first step:
PCS - 25% of phones between 8-1-02 and 12-31-02
Verizon - 25% of phones between 8-1-02 and 3-31-03

The next step:
PCS - 100% of phones starting 1-1-02
Verizon - 50% of phones between 4-1-03 and 12-31-03

Verizon obviously negotiated the better deal. I don't know the requirements for smaller SPs.
