Microsoft's earnings were always too low to justify the market capitalisation, ever since the mid 1980s.

Ahhh, the old "MSFT has been overvalued during most its existence, so therefore buy QCOM at any price" argument. The argument is wearing a little thin I think. Nowdays, people don't so readily make the jump between the premise and conclusion.
