Dave,

re:"I don't think it would have happened; the US was prepared to step into the fray"

I don't believe that was the case in 1948. The relationship between the U.S. and Israel (and the Arab nations) didn't really change until LBJ, and RMN (especially Nixon).

Actually, back then, the US was ready to step in......in fact, the US was pushing for Israel's statehood. It tried to get Britain to reverse its position on the 1939 White Paper, and with the help of Russia got a plan passed through the UN that set up the partitioning of the Palestine region.

The US was the first to recognize the new state; however, Pres. Truman did waiver when people began to question whether Israeli would be viable as an independent nation but in the end, the US was behind the new nation. That's why I don't believe that the US would have abandoned Israel should problems have arisen that Israel could not resolve. It least it sounds that way from what I have read.

A more important question is what do you think would have happened if the Arabs had destroyed Israel in 1973?

I am not sure why you ask the question? Most at the time would have agreed, I think, that the Arabs certainly did damage to Israel's ego and the ensuing arms race hurt its economy. However, I don't understand why do you think the Arabs might have destroyed Israel?

I am curious. Why do you think the Arabs could have gotten away with destroying Israel with the US in the background......of course sharing that background with Russia?
