In the SGI Origin3000 systems already a provision has been made in the C-bricks to put in Intel's IA-64 processors instead of the MIPS R14000 (see \ref{origin}. Though SGI projects that at least still one MIPS chip generation, the R16000, will (can) be used in Origin systems, a fast transition to the Intel line is probable. This also depends on the production volume of the IA-64 chips. When this production takes on, it will be very hard for almost any other chips manufacturer to compete and transition will be faster. On might expect IA-64 based systems in the Origin class to appear early next year. SGI has put in a large amount of software development work both in IA-64 compiler technology and Linux-enabling technology which are extra arguments for adopting the IA-64 line...
