FBI Arrests Islamic Leader
Connection To Terrorist Operations Suspected

POSTED: 1:35 p.m. EDT April 30, 2002

CHICAGO -- An Islamic charity in the Chicago area -- and its leader -- are being charged with perjury, for denying that they supported terrorist groups.

According to an affidavit, the executive director of the group has had a relationship with Osama bin Laden and his associates. It says those ties go back "more than a decade."

The charity is Benevolence International Foundation.

Its leader, Enaam Arnaout, was arrested Tuesday morning at his suburban Chicago home. The charge is that he and the charity made false statements in their lawsuit against the federal government.

They'd sued the government after the group's headquarters was raided by federal agents in December and its assets were frozen. Federal officials said then that the group was suspected of being involved with terrorists.
