Maybe the issue is what the brokerage is actually selling. Most customers believe that the brokers are selling advice and access, not the given financial instruments themselves - just as a travel agent isn't selling airplanes or casinos. Brokers are supposed to be brokering - acting as "honest" brokers or middlemen (er, middlepersons?). They certainly don't advertise themselves as the manufacturers of companies or of equity interest in companies, though, admittedly, Blodgett and all the mini-Blodgetts may certainly have stepped over that line, among others.
