Be aware: The fish sauce smells pretty bad while cooking but it mellows out and adds a rich complexity to the flavor. Measure carefully -- it is a potent flavor and you do not want to over do it.

You really will need to find some form of tamarind fruit/jelly/juce/cake too. I notice your ref does not use the tamarind. Take a look at a few other recipes to get an idea of the variations on the theme.

These two ingredients are essential to the authenticity of the dish (but maybe you could fake the tamarind with some orange juice in a pinch). :o)
