Meanwhile, great cities were being built, industries were established, education came to the masses, democracy became the tide of the future, slavery was abolished, science developed the periodic table and the cyclotron, we invented the airplane, life expectancy kept rising in the developed and semi- developed world, people without limbs were given amazing prostheses, people with bad hearts might become well with a transplant, the novel developed, philosophers debated, Jane Addams founded Hull House, Dorothy Day founded the Catholic Worker, Albert Schweitzer built a hospital in the jungle.......it is a very mixed bag..........
