don't think we are in disagreement about this in general terms, though I believe there's a certain subsistence level of goods and services that should be accessible to all citizens, regardless of income.
Define "subsistence". Poor Americans are doing fine by world standards.

This is simply a rubber argument that can be stretched to get back to BE's statement.

I agree that there should be a "floor" beyond which we do not let people sink. However, those who are capable have an affirmative obligation to try to get productive work, and sometimes need to be given a bit of a shove. That leaves more for the old, infirm, handicapped, and helpless, after all.......
