I know. It's a nightmare. And many girls die from it. It's done with unsterile instruments, traditionally -- pieces of broken glass, rusty knives -- and sewn up crudely, sometimes with with thorns. There is, of course, no anesthesia, in the traditional practice. Girls can die from shock, or loss of blood, or infection.

I've read that some of the now-grieving parents of some of the girls who have died are now part of the movement to end the practice.
