That the rich are bad because they can afford to buy what they like? As long as it is fair exchange, both parties benefit. Paying your way is not the same as robbery. Even assuming that the rich inherited, and were "undeserving", is the good luck of some a reason for resentment? Brains, beauty, athletic ability, and other qualities are doled out unequally? Should we despise the intelligent, who, by and large, run the world, for "dominating" the mediocre or stupid? Or should we thank them for putting their brains to use for the common good, as is often the case. Similarly, the rich are a by- product of a productive economic system, and have their role in the general improvement of all...... Are you under the impression that I despise the rich, or am arguing that they do not deserve the feathers in their nest, simply out of principle? Then you would be wrong. What I agreed with was the point that the rich can and do sometimes abuse their power in ways that hurt the poor. Elaborate tax shelters is an example. WRT Should we despise the intelligent, who, by and large, run the world, for "dominating" the mediocre or stupid? Are you suggesting that the rich are by and large, intelligent, and the poor are, by and large, mediocre or stupid? the rich are a by- product of a productive economic system, and have their role in the general improvement of all....... I don't disagree with this point, though I think their role is sometimes neglected. In the liberal Democrat household in which I was raised, the responsibility of the wealthy toward others was encouraged in terms of charitable gifts and time spent. I think is becoming less the case for wealthy Americans, despite Bush's wishes.
