Fuji Photo Sees Digital Photo Printer Sales Doubling (Update3)
By Julie Tay

Tokyo, May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Fuji Photo Film Co., the world's biggest photographic-equipment maker by market value, said it will roll out new products later this month that will help more than double its sales of digital photo printers within two years.

The new home-use printers create images that don't fade as fast as those produced by Fuji's current machines, said Satoshi Tasaki, general manager of the company's printer business. Tasaki sees the domestic market for digital photo printers doubling, to about 500,000 units sold annually, by 2004. The new product line will help boost Fuji's share of the pie to about one-third from its current 20 to 25 percent, he said in an interview.

Fuji and other Japanese printer makers are betting that rising digital camera use will stoke demand for photo-quality printers. Shinko Electric Co., Japan's biggest maker of robots used in chipmaking factories, will enter the fray this month with its first home-use printers. The problem is that many digital camera users aren't printing their photos, at least not at home.
