Sycamore Networks Says 3rd-Qtr Sales Missed Forecasts (Update1)
By Scott Lanman

Chelmsford, Massachusetts, April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Sycamore Networks Inc. said fiscal third-quarter revenue fell more than analysts expected as customers bought fewer products from the maker of fiber-optic networking equipment.

The Chelmsford, Massachusetts-based company said revenue in the period ended April 27 totaled $13 million to $14 million, according to a preliminary estimate, down from $54.2 million a year earlier. Analysts forecast sales of $17.1 million, the average in a Thomson Financial/First Call poll.

Telephone companies are reducing orders for gear from companies such as Sycamore. Its sales have plunged in the past year as the finances of Williams Communications Group Inc., once its largest customer, deteriorated. Williams filed for bankruptcy protection last week.
