National Semiconductor Corp. today announced two acquisitions in the field of analog and power management technologies.

National is acquiring Fincitec Oy of Kemi, Finland, and ARSmikro OU of Tallinn, Estonia, in deals worth a total of $15 million. The two companies develop low-voltage, low-power ASICs for battery-powered devices.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based National said the acquisitions strengthen its development capabilities for power management circuits for the portable market and will allow it to expand its suite of integrated and discrete silicon for handheld devices.

Fincitec is a fabless ASIC vendor with more than 200 completed designs, specializing in ultra low voltage/low power mixed-signal, logic and system-on-a-chip ASICs for handheld battery-powered applications. The company has in-house design and test capabilities, developing and then producing devices on CMOS, Bi-CMOS and bipolar technologies. ARSmikro has provided analog design services for Fincitec. The two companies bring 55 employees to National.

"Joining National Semiconductor significantly strengthens the semiconductor industry in Finland," said Paavo Takalo, president of Fincitec and chairman of the board for ARSmikro, in a statement. "National’s global presence and outstanding manufacturing will open exciting prospects to us and expands the ability of our design staff to address opportunities with major manufacturers of portable electronic devices."
