(Nasdaq: DFIB - news) today announced that it has been contracted to outfit the standing Army of Spain with automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The military agency ordered an initial shipment of Cardiac Science AEDs for use in a variety of facilities following an army initiative in 2001 mandating that the organization deploy state-of-the-art lifesaving devices. AEDs are portable, easy-to-use automated devices that deliver a life-saving electric shock to the heart to halt rapid and chaotic heart activity -- sudden cardiac arrest -- and restore a normal heart rhythm. Last year, the Spanish Army decided to significantly expand the number of AEDs it deploys and since that time, army officials have undertaken a lengthy analysis of the ease-of-use and dependability of available defibrillators and as a result selected the Cardiac Science AED. Cardiac Science's Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Michael Gioffredi said, "Cardiac Science is extremely focused on expanding its market share for AEDs internationally. The Spanish Army order is an excellent example of how based on the strength of our product offering and strong dealer network we are winning business in the emerging AED markets in Europe and around the world. We shipped AEDs to over 30 countries so far this year and now have over 50 prominent distributors representing our products worldwide." Several branches of the United States military have deployed Cardiac Science AEDs in the past year. The U.S. Army outfitted facilities across the county, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY and other notable military purchases include the U.S. Naval Reserve Station in Newport, RI; Ranger Training Brigade at Ft. Benning, GA; U.S. Navy Fitness Center, Millington, TN; U.S. Army's 99th Regional Support Command based in Oakdale, PA as well as the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, which purchased devices for VA hospitals and other facilities across a five state area earlier this year. Looking better anyhow. CC
