Croc, Yesterday I noticed something unusual on the trunk of my lone back-yard tree, a large water oak. It was an irregularly shaped dark spot of about eight inches across. I supposed it was a mold but never went out to look at it more closely. So I was surprised this morning to see that the spot had moved about a foot and had assumed a shape that roughly corresponds to the state of Florida. With admittedly a bit of trepidation, I went out for an inspection and was surprised to see that it's a mass of slender, dark brown insects slowly moving about within the well-defined border.

Any ideas on what these creatures are up to?

Update: The southern part of the mass has seceded from Florida and is moving southward. The northern group has remained stationary. Maybe I should've directed my question to JFred?
