I believe this now. Unfortunately, the "bad guys" won.

Well, we are closer than I thought. As for the bad guys winning, I no longer have a clear idea who were which. I can make a negative argument for both sides.

The one argument that still makes sense, however, was the the North Vietnamese had won the "nationalist" argument. I forget who said that most clearly, perhaps it was Kennedy. Whoever won that argument would win the war.
