why do you think we have such an oppressive tax system? liberals and free trade! one of the greatest liberals and free traders of the 20th century, cordell hull, authored the nation's first income tax in 1913. when tariffs were the principle source of revenues to the federal government we didn't have a despotic federal government breathing down our necks! ever since tariffs were slashed and the income tax took its place, government has spiraled out of control! protectionists prefer taxes on foreign goods. free traders prefer taxes on american incomes.
