WC and Fred,
sorry guys this became a ramble
I see more signals this morning that once that bethlehem mess is cleaned up, there may be quicker movement to peace than most folks believe. This morning Arafat is again talking about the "peace of the brave" that he forged with his "partner" Rabin. He asked the Palestinian people to remember this. Yes he attacked Sharon and the IDF as well but a door has been opened here even if ever so slightly. My gut tells me that serious money will change hands once peace is near. New day to day leaders for the Palestinians with Arafat as titular head of state. With Israel its more dicey because it will be either sharon or bibi that will be in power. Has or Will either of them fall victim to the "Greater Israel" myth?
Heard dick armey reiterate de lays call for the israelis to evict the palestinians from the west bank. Whats their angle? Are they appealing to the religious right or are they after Jewish votes or both? Real peace will be more attractive to both groups i believe. As for the Jews, no matter how angry they are now, most know that greater israel will one day bring about its demise. The Saudi plan with tweaked borders will work with US/GB/Nato presence. Suicide bombing should dry up on its own. It has FAILED as as a tactic and will only be resorted to again in very desparate circumstances. Arafat needs to concentrate on his true internal enemies Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The Saudis should be able to control most Sunnis. Now Iran and Hizbolla is a wild card. But as bernard lewis said, the people of Iran are about ready to rise up and the big question becomes whether their army will shoot at them when the clerics order it. And if they do shoot, will the US take action to aid the Iranian people?
I used to watch The A Team with my son when he was little. There was always complete chaos during the show but at the end of every episode George Peppard would sit back and light up a cigar and say "I love when a plan comes together." Anyone thing the Bush White House is lucky this way? All that criticism from the dumb so called intellectual left and it takes W, either consciously or unconsciously, to allow necessary TIME to elapse so both sides can claim victory of sorts and be able to move back to the peace table. Americas mixed messages kept both sides off balance on one hand and hopeful on the other. Thats enough for today. Mike
