Housing affordability off in Q1 by Steve Kerch
Rising home prices and a slight uptick in mortgage rates offset a small increase in household income to make home buying less affordable in the first quarter. The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday its affordability index slipped to 137.2 from a revised 141 at the end of 2001. The index measures the ability of a household with the median area income to afford a median-priced existing home. David Lereah, chief economist for the Realtors, said the readng was a reflection of low investories of homes for sale, which has pushed up prices across most of the country.
