You're right. The Plug Power fuel cell unit for the home was supposed to be available a year ago. I think that the holdup is getting the costs down, and reliability up. Coleman has a fuel cell unit that should be available any day now, but at $7,995 for a 1.2 kW unit, and a run time of 8-10 hours it will only be practical for those who "must have" juice during a power failure. popsci.com

It's a start anyway. BTW, the hydrogen will be supplied by metal hydride cannisters that Nealm thinks is a battery. Two plusses are that the unit is almost totally silent, and it can be used safely indoors. The exhaust is water vapor.
