There are miles of differences between a tree fruit such as a peach or apple which has a great chance of never touching earth or manure, a strawberry which grows , perhaps or perhaps not in contact with manure and a root crop whose flesh picks up bits of the earth with growth.

It should also be noted China has a lower use of anti-bionics in the food chain. Their strains of E. coli and salmonella are often not or are less anti-biotic resistant.

IMO we would be wise to draw lines. Least bad and possibly most bad may be G.M. foods. Here we hold the promise beating every human disease related to diet. Currently being planted is a new "Golden Rice" with two added beta carotene genes which will reduce diet related blindness in much of the 3rd world. The 1015 Onion is the stuff of legend where a sugar gene from an onion has been added to an onion only creating a tear free sweet onion. Maybe only two or three years away is a peanut which will be safe for those with the(rare but) deadly allergy to peanuts. On the other hand, though, is a GM sorghum which may not be digestible by anything on earth & could inter-breed with all other existing types. Artificial fertilizers, when used wisely, provide little or light liability and have been used since the 1860's. The next least bad are perhaps the growth hormones given bovine. A greater liability comes with some insecticides over others and same hold true with herbicides, some being mild when used with care to others wild and always dangerous. Most dangerous of all is the use of non-prescribed antibiotics where a full regiment may not be taken or it was unneeded.

Carrots Modified to Contain Hepatitis B Vaccine
Fri May 10, 5:35 PM ET
By Hannah Cleaver

BERLIN (Reuters Health) - German scientists have grown genetically modified carrots that contain the vaccine against hepatitis B, which they say could dramatically cut the costs of preventing the disease.

Development has reached the stage where the carrots are ready to begin pre-clinical trials and researchers say that carrot-sourced vaccines could be a reality within about 3 years.

The current vaccine against hepatitis B is expensive to produce and is administered via three injections, which further increases costs and strains health services.

But now plant specialists and virologists from Giessen University in Germany have successfully inserted the gene for the hepatitis B surface antigen normally used in the vaccine into carrots, and have been growing the vegetables in the thousands.

"We can make 100,000 or so plants in 2 weeks and within 3 months they are ready to eat," said Dr. Jafargholi Imani from the research group at Giessen University. (cont)
