I find it perfectly possible that Barrick might want to take over Anglo - that rather moribund outfit - but I don't think they'd call their shots in advance in such an obvious way. Godsell may well be talking up the price of gold but it's a somehat paranoid leap to say he's doing it to fend off Barrick!!

I don't think Barrick's management said anywhere that they book unrealised profits - which is what you appear to be claiming. On the other hand they have to book unrealised losses. Lower of cost or market value and all that jazz.
