White House: Arafat Should Focus On Peace, Not Outbursts

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- After Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, emerging from his isolation, delivered a tirade against Israel , the Bush administration said Thursday it would be more useful for him to try to focus on promoting peace.

During his outburst, Arafat called the Israelis "terrorists, Nazis and racists."

In response, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said, "It would preferable for all three parties to focus on what they can do to promote peace."

Asked what the next step in the peace process would be, Fleischer reiterated that all parties have responsibilities. For the Israelis, this means completing the pullback from the West Bank, for the Palestinians cracking down on terrorism and for the Arab states stopping their promotion of terrorism.

The White House appeared lukewarm on the prospects that Congress will begin work on a non-binding resolution expressing support for Israel .

Fleischer said that passing such a resolution now would be less damaging that passing it last week when tensions in the Middle East were much higher. He declined to endorse the idea and instead said it was Congress's perogative to pass such a resolution.

He did say that no U.S. foreign policy can succeed if every member of Congress decides he or she should also act as a secretary of state.

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschel, D-S.D., warned President George W. Bush that the Senate would pass a resolution.
