Well for instance it is considered ethical to ride your horse into battle even though to some extent the innocent creature is placed to some extent in harms way. The allowance is considered because it isn't generally the rule that the enemy will be targeting the innocent creature.

Likewise with using rodents, birds, dolphins etc. if the innocent creature is some sort of vehicle that isn't by design going to be blown up then I have an easier time considering military applications.
