Fyo,

Advertising itself is a source of distortion, but it is a cost of business / acquiring new business. When advertising begins to act as a rebate, that's when things uglier. The concept of a rebate is the best example of this distortion, and personally, I hate it.

fyo, re: inflating revenue through advertising

I appreciate this argument as it was a means abused by some dot coms who swapped advertising to pad otherwise small revenues. However, I don't feel this argument is a substantial issue for Intel -- whose advertising budget is less than 5% of its revenues (I don't recall the exact number but it was big until I put it into perspective).
