Folks figured out (well, actually a satirical poet pointed it out to them - heh) that they were victims of a "bread and circuses" scheme and so they rebelled in many ways. Seem familiar? Of course, the "bread and circuses" scheme in modern society is a lot more captivating and mesmerizing than when the Roman government employed it. Our "leaders" have obviously studied history well.
